We are thrilled to be reviewing the AIAIAI TMA-1. The renowned Danish audio company AIAIAI brings us high-quality studio monitoring in collaboration with Young Guru, a grammy-award winning sound engineer who’s worked with artists such as Jay Z, Drake and Kanye West.

What is it?

The Young Guru edition adds new touches to an AIAIAI classic, the original TMA-1 headphones, with subtle upgrades in design and comfort, and extra clarity in the top end.

Who’s it for?

Producers or sound engineers who are always on the go, and are seeking a set of headphones that are extremely lightweight yet deliver pro-quality sound.

Style

These headphones have a minimal yet edgy design scheme. The overall matte black finish topped with a stark red cable and a gold-plated headphone jack gives the Young Guru a very rugged feel.

Usability

This is where the focus of the headphones lies: the nylon and fibreglass structure that was designed specifically to endure hard handlers. The drivers are well protected in the foam of the ear pads, which have been tested to withstand any climate. Young Gurus were built for no-nonsense mobile wear – they stay firm and stable and can be worn for long hours without ear fatigue. Embracing your head with perfect comfort, the ridged ear cups can accommodate 10 different sizes.

The Upside

One thing that really distinguishes the TMA-1 headphones and sets them apart is that any damaged parts can be replaced individually.

The Downside

After using these for a week, I felt that these headphones were very delicate, fragile and required extra care. A pair that comes with a price tag like the TMA-1s should certainly be more sturdy.

Final Call on the AIAIAI TMA-1

The overall sound is nice and warm on the low frequencies but as you move higher in the spectrum, it tends to get a little shrill if you’re using them as studio headphones. In my opinion, these will be better put to use for DJ’ing – provided you’re willing to spend this much.
