Choosing your first condenser microphone is perhaps the biggest challenge faced by emerging producers and musicians. Before you take the leap, there are so many important factors to consider: type, polar pattern, frequency response, versatility, and, of course, budget. After using CAD GXL2400 Large Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Microphone in several different situations, I’d say that it’s a great option.
What is it?
A large-diaphragm cardioid condenser mic that’s easy on the pocket, durable, and versatile in usage. We sampled the GXL2400 mic with acoustic guitars, guitar amps, voiceovers, and vocal recordings.
Who is the CAD GXL2400 for?
Those looking for a reasonably priced condenser microphone.
Style
The outer-shell design of the GXL2400 resembles the Neumann U87. It comes with a pretty sturdy shock-mount and a neat leather pouch to carry the mic around.
Usability
As far as the polar pattern/directional response is concerned, the GXL2400 has a fixed cardioid pattern, ensuring great reception in front of the diaphragm. If the source is shrill, angling the mic slightly so the diaphragm faces away from the sound will even out high frequencies.
The Upside
The large-diaphragm of the GXL2400 responds to a very wide frequency range, and its high sensitivity with low distortion ensures a smooth recording.
CAD GXL2400 Downside
It doesn’t really compare to the high-end condenser mics. A padded pouch might sweeten the deal!
Final Call on the CAD GXL2400
The GXL2400 is an excellent choice for your first condenser microphone: it offers great sound at a very tempting price point.
