Alesis 3632 Compressor Review

Alesis 3632 – What is it?

Alesis 3632 is a dynamic processor that builds on the popular design and features of its predecessor 3630. It has a Compressor/limiter/expander in a single minimal rack. Also, the Alesis 3632 conveys brilliant sonic quality for any application in studio recording & live.

Who is it for?

This interface is ideal for recording engineers, music producers & singer-songwriters who aim to get into the hardware realm of dynamic processing, who cannot afford the outrageously expensive analogue compressors.

Usability

The process of changing the dynamic range of an audio source, to make it easier to place in the overall frequency spectrum is called Dynamic Processing. Dynamic range is the difference between the loudest and the softest level.
ALESIS COMPRESSOR 3632

Alesis 3632 offers a compressor/expander/limiter/gate for Dynamic processing. It can function as either two individual mono processors, or you can stereo-link for true stereo compression.

One push of a button and the 3632 Compressor’s attack and release, automatically engages depending on the source signal. What’s unique about the Compressor, is its VCA (voltage-controlled amplifier) which makes everything you hear smooth. Use the sidechain function on each channel to trigger compression on a signal, whenever needed. It has a low-cut filter to control “pumping” due to heavy compression in the low-frequency.

GAIN REDUCTION ON ALESIS COMPRESSOR 3632

The bright LED meters displaying gain reduction and input/output levels, helps you with visual monitoring.

The 3632 has a basic Expander/Gate which keeps your unwanted noise out of your sound. As the signal falls below the threshold you’ve chosen, the Expander/Gate takes low-level noise down or closes the gate depending on the parameters set.

Frankly, the truth is 3632 has made its name as an inexpensive and all-purpose budget compressor.

Upside

• Budget compressor

Downside

• Noisy

Final Call

If you’re looking for perfectly transparent dynamic range control or effortless mix buss glue, it’s probably not the best choice. But, if you’re after good basic compression, versatility with classic pumping sidechain character, the 3632 is a worthy successor to the 3630’s throne.
