When Markus Schulz visited I Love Music Academy
In 2015, Markus Schulz visited I Love Music Academy in Gurgaon for a special Q & A session with our students, as part of the VH1 Supersonic Classroom 101 series.
We were fortunate to be able to chat with him about his latest work, the journey he travelled to become one of the world’s most sought-after DJs, and the production techniques that define his signature sound.
What is your ideal signal chains while mixing drums?
Markus Schulz: One of the most important things for me is a transient chamber on the drums. If you have the right Attack on it you don’t need to heavily compress it. So I use – compression, EQ, transient shaper and then I use another compressor just very lightly at the end of that. Making your own sounds is a completely different process than mixing a track.
When I am mixing a track one of the most important things I like to use is the transient shaper which brings out the Attack and decay when you need it and you can shorten up the attack and decay on things that you don’t really need a lot of decay on.
What other Genres of Music do you like listening to?
Markus Schulz: I think you have to listen to different sounds just to see what else is out there. I draw a lot of influence from classic rock. The old Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Eagles and stuff like that. I mean, back in those days they would make a song 10 minutes long, and those songs would evolve into a whole story. And I find more than producing is the songwriting. When I mean songwriting I don’t just mean the lyrics, also the writing on the melodies and stuff.
