The Stutter Effect
The stutter effect also is known as Stuttering or glitch. This is a vocal effect achieved by chopping audio into a very small section which is repeatedly copied and pasted onto a track. The same effect can be achieved by many methods. Check out this video explaining how you can easily achieve the stutter effect using Ableton Live‘s Gate Instrument.

The stutter effect has mostly been associated with dance music and electronica. It had its origins in the MIDI sequencing “machine gun effect.” Machine gun effect occurs when a sample is repeated numerous times in a row. Since the attack of these samples is identical, the resulting sound is very repetitive, resembling a machine gun. However, in the creation of dance music, this effect, first appeared when snare drum rolls were quantized into small note values (64-128 BPM).
Artists including BT, Hybrid, Aphex Twin, and Autechre are considered pioneers of using the stutter effect (stuttering).
Below are a few artists that will give you an idea of how artists have incorporated stutter effects in their tracks.
